Proper interpretation and use of MRI, fMRI and MRS findings requires the understanding of the basic physiological processes that lead to the observed signals. In this area of research, considerable efforts are devoted to modeling mechanisms of neurovascular and neurometabolic coupling in health and disease, as well as to exploiting mechanisms beyond alterations of dHb content to generate functional MRI contrast.
